What is Chiropractic Care and how Does it Work?
You may be unfamiliar with Chiropractic care and we would like to give you an easy to understand overview of what it is and how care can help you.
Chiropractic therapies are based on the fact that disease is often caused by interference with nerve function. Dr. Bahm is trained in the art of spinal adjustment to bring nerves back "on line" which causes restoration of normal nerve function in a natural, non-stress method, and without drugs. Chiropractic uses gentle hands-on, non-invasive techniques that reduce or remove stresses on the body, allowing your body to heal itself.
The skinny - Chiropractic is the only profession dedicated to the detection and correction of Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC).
“That’s great!” I can hear you say, “but what is Vertebral Subluxation Complex?”
The technical definition is that VSC is the misalignment of one or more of the moveable vertebra in the spinal column. These misalignments can cause alterations of nerve functions which interfere with the transmission of mental impulses. These interferences may produce pain and/or reduce the body's ability to heal itself and maintain healthy functions.
“Fantastic! But what does that mean?”
Think of your spine as an information superhighway that takes messages from your brain to your body, and your body to your brain. A vertebral subluxation is similar to a three car pile up, sure you can take a detour to get round it, but it is not the most efficient route.
As we put our bodies through the pace of daily living we can create congestion on our spinal superhighways. Remember when you picked up that heavy box and “put your back out?” Or that time when you fell asleep on the sofa and your neck was stiff in the morning? Or possibly the time when over exerted yourself in your exercise class because you wanted to impress the new instructor and got that funny sensation down your arm? Any and all of these can cause a three car pile up as far as your spine is concerned.
When you are sitting in traffic and the congestion clears up and the traffic flows the way it is supposed to, you can get to work in 12 minutes instead of 47; that is the equivalent of what happens in your spine when vertebrae that are misaligned are put back into place. This allows your body and brain to talk to each other and that promotes healing and optimum health – and that’s just really good!
The technical - VSC is the underlying cause of many health problems. Chiropractic is founded on the knowledge that the nervous system controls the function and regeneration of virtually every cell, tissue, organ and system of the body. Chiropractic modes of treatment address these misalignments that interfere with normal nerve function and provide the body with the opportunity to heal itself. Chiropractic care involves manual adjustment and manipulation of the vertebra to bring them back into alignment which often brings immediate relief and continued treatment often corrects chronic and acute conditions.
“I love that, but tell me more about the superhighway….”
Suppose you have multiple three car pile ups along a 20 mile stretch of road and you have to take lots of detours, this just takes a really long time to get from A to B. Taking all those detours can be a real pain in the neck, or other body part for that matter. Those three car pile ups can be the cause of your real pain in the neck, or headache, or tingling in your limbs or other symptoms. You can take medication to make the pain go away, but what you really need to do is unblock the highway and let traffic flow freely again. This is exactly what Chiropractic care does; by moving obstructions and getting your spine moving the way it is supposed to, you will just feel better.
